Chief: Worst field fires in four or five years
News · April 24, 2014

After West Branch Fire Department sprayed down the edges of a field fire April 10, a reporter asked WBFD Fire Chief "about the field fire." He replied, "Which one?"

The department has been averaging two to three field fires per day for the two weeks prior, he said, and this is the worst he has seen it in four or five years.

That April 10 fire was on the Bill Kron property, about eight miles mostly north of town, west of Plato Road and south of 230th Street, in hilly country that made it difficult for the fire department to find the best entrance point. Kron had to meet the WBFD, and Tipton Fire Department, trucks and lead them to it through the trees. "It wasn't too bad," Stoolman said, "it barely got into the timber."
