The Friends of the Dog Park and the Animal Control Commission will host a grand opening for the newly finished dog park 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28.

On Monday, the West Branch City Council approved dog park tags with fees of $5 per day, or $15 per year for residents and $20 a year for non-residents. There is a $5 surcharge added to annual tags if the dogs are not spayed or neutered.

Amy Lynch, a member of the Animal Control Commission, said the commission recommended fees of $20 a year with $25 for dogs not yet spayed or neutered.

Pet owners may purchase tags that are good for one, two or three years, with expiration dates tied to vaccination expirations.

Lynch said the dog park will be open from sunrise to sunset seven days a week and that residents will be asked to "self-police" most of the time.

"Please be respectful and clean up after your dog," she said.

Volunteers will stop by the park to "spot check" that users have tags to use the park. The park will be staffed Saturday, Sunday and Monday, both monitoring the park and selling dog tags.

To get a dog park tag, pet owners must have a West Branch dog license, which can be purchased at the grand opening.

The city council, at its Aug. 4 meeting, also noted that rules for the dog park state that children under the age of 16 should be accompanied by an adult at the park.
