He traveled the world while on active duty, serving two tours of Vietnam, being stationed out of Macon, Ga., and Ft. Huachuca, Ariz. During his years in the army he met Diane Fairchild, and they were later married in July 1976. They moved to Iowa where Diane was from, and for many years Howard worked for the University of Iowa in security, from which he later retired. Those who knew Howard knew a humble, gentle man, one with a quick wit and a sense of humor, one who would praise you and never had a harsh word towards anyone. He was proud to have served his country, and his family meant the world to him.

His family includes step-daughters Theresa Hadlock (Donald) and Lisa Ridings; brothers Marvin T. Carswell and Robert Carswell (Lex); as well as several nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents; wife Diane; brothers Homer, Conway, Leonard and Merdis Carswell; and sisters Mattie Bell Register and Willie Dell Worley.
