Peter James Koenig, 70, of West Liberty died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his family, following an extended illness.

Funeral mass was Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in West Liberty. Visitation and a wake service were Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014, also at the church. Peter was born March 31, 1944, in Wabasha, Minn., the son of Richard and Marjorie Carlson Koenig. His family later moved to Davenport, Iowa, where Peter graduated from Davenport Central High School. He later attended Morningside College and the University of Iowa. He was united in marriage to Patricia Jo Simon on Feb. 5, 1966, in West Liberty, Iowa. He then went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force for four years during the Vietnam War. Peter was employed with car dealerships for over 30 years, including Hartwig Motors, Winebrenner Ford and Iowa City Auto. He later worked at the University of Iowa’s College of Dentistry, where he was honored as an ambassador upon his retirement this past May.

Peter was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in West Liberty. He enjoyed racing cars at West Liberty and Columbus Junction. He also played on the Adam’s Boys slow-pitch softball team for many years. Peter was very involved with his children and grandchildren’s many athletic activities and was attending sporting events until just recently.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Koenig; son Jeffrey (Karla) Koenig and grandchildren: Sydni, Peyton, Alex and Carey of Iowa City; son Michael (Melissa) Koenig and grandchildren: Jace, Lake and Meg of Durant; son Bradley (Nikki) Koenig and grandchildren: Cooper, Tatum, Sasha and Peter James of West Liberty; daughter Trisha (Nathan) Hall and grandchildren: Sailor, Finley, Pearson and Sullivan of West Liberty; brother Thomas (Sandy) Koenig of Blaine, Wash.; and his two dogs: Zoey and Doogan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, mother-in-law and father-in-law and granddog Cosmo.
