City Lights: Remember to put leaves on curb, don’t burn them
by Matt Goodale, Public Works · Op-Ed · October 09, 2014

As we move into the fall season, the City of West Branch would like to remind residents that burning leaves or any other type of yard waste is prohibited within the city limits.

The City would ask instead that residents make use of our curbside yard waste and leaf collection programs.

Not all residents may be aware that the Public Works Department started a curbside yard waste collection this spring. The program has been a great success with collections on the first and third Thursday of every month during the spring, summer and fall months.

Yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, wastes common in gardening or landscaping, clippings from bushes or shrubs, sticks and tree limbs. Limbs must be cut to under four-foot lengths and be in manageable bundles at the curbside. All containers must be under 50 pounds. The City asks that yard waste be placed in decomposable bags or containers to be emptied into a Public Works vehicle. Any yard waste in plastic bags is not accepted.

The City will begin its curbside leaf collection on Oct. 13th. Collection will begin at approximately 7:30 am on the east side of town every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Public Works makes every attempt to reach the whole town each day, however occasionally leaf collection cannot be completed in one day.

During those times, Public Works will do another collection the following day for residents that could not be picked up the previous day.

The City asks that leaves be raked to the curb for pickup and be free of tree limbs, sticks, grass clippings and garbage. Leaves mixed with other yard waste or placed in plastic bags will not be accepted.

The City’s Public Works Department will continue both collections until Dec. 5th. After that time, residents may haul yard waste to the City’s brush pile located south of I-80, one half mile east of S. Downey Street on Fawcett Drive.
