Letter: Only Dems will fight for the soul of this country
Op-Ed · October 16, 2014

When will we begin to invest in the future of this country by making sure every child receives quality child care, early childhood education including Head Start for 3-year-olds and preschool for all 4-year-olds?

Or make K-12 education a funding priority, giving administrators and teachers the tools and time they need to help every child reach their potential? And when will we make college affordable for every young person and charge them the same interest rates our big banks pay when they borrow money?

When will we pay working men and women a minimum wage that lifts them out of poverty and off welfare? And have a country where women get paid the same as men for the same work and get the same opportunities and respect?

When will all children have the nutrition needed for their optimum physical and mental growth and health? And every person has access to physical and mental health care and preventative services without living with the threat of it being taken away? As well as every woman having access to reproductive information, care and the right to make their own choices with the advice of their physician?

When will every citizen be assured of their Constitutional right to vote without undue burdens and harassment? And have a country where all women and men feel free to marry the one they love without fearing the loss of that right?

When will we finally invest in the repair and rebuilding of our crumbling roads, bridges and power grid? And commit to the clean energy sources of the future like solar and wind so we can take serious the changing climate with its frequent and violent storms, melting ice caps, droughts and ecological damage?

You have the answer to all these questions in your hands as you go to vote. Only one party, the Democrats, will fight for these things and pay for them by reforming the tax code so those who have benefitted the most in our country invest adequately in its future. The Republicans would rather trust the wealthy to come down from their million dollar penthouses, out of their multi-million dollar mansions and off their fancy yachts when they finally, if ever, have a large enough share of the nation’s wealth to bless us with their benevolence. Good luck on that plan.

We are currently engaged in a struggle for the soul of this country and you hold the key to the future in your hands. What kind of world do you want to leave your grandchildren and future generations? Our children are watching and waiting.
