Letter: We must fight cancer, an unforgiving disease
Op-Ed · November 13, 2014

My name is Jordan Arp and I am a 2011 graduate of West Branch High School.

Last spring I wrote a letter to the editor asking for donations for an organization I’m involved in at the University of Northern Iowa, Colleges Against Cancer. The money that you helped me raise went to the American Cancer Society and cancer research.

Due to the amazing community support I received last year, I was able to surpass my original goal of $500 and raised a total of $1,045! I cannot express enough thanks and gratitude to the West Branch community and all who donated to this great cause! Without your help, raising that much money would never have been possible! Overall as an organization, our Relay for Life event was able to raise over $65,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Since I am a senior at the University of Northern Iowa, this will be my last year to participate in Colleges Against Cancer. Based on the phenomenal response last year, and this being my final year to participate I have set a very ambitious goal. My fundraising goal for the 2015 Relay for Life event is to raise $1,500! This is obviously a much bigger number than my goal last year, however, I know that with help from people like you I can make it happen!

Members of my family have been affected by cancer and I know, too, many other people who have had their lives altered by this unforgiving disease. My goal is to see a cure for cancer developed during my lifetime and a donation of any size could help turn that dream into a reality! If you would like to help me reach my goal and contribute to a great cause, checks can be sent to my personal address,

Jordan Arp, 1803 ½ Franklin St., Cedar Falls, IA 50613, to the American Cancer Society at, 4080 First Ave NE Ste #101, Cedar Rapids, IA 52402. (If you send a donation to the American Cancer Society office in Cedar Rapids please attach a note with my name so that your donation counts towards my fundraising goal) or you can donate online by going to www.relayforlife.org/uni clicking on the donation button, then clicking on the donate to a participant tab, and searching for my name.

The West Branch Community showed me a great amount of support last year and I am asking for your help again! Please assist me in creating a world where no one has to hear the words, “It’s cancer,” again!
