Cold, snow lead to few accidents

A slick snowfall joined a string of unseasonably cold days on Saturday night, resulting in at least two accidents, only one of which was serious enough to prompt a call to West Branch Fire Department.

An accident on Cedar-Johnson road, Fire Chief Kevin Stoolman said, did not require emergency help though the car remained on Cedar-Johnson Road near Herbert Hoover Highway on Sunday afternoon with no one around after apparently sliding into the eastern ditch.

Stoolman said a one-vehicle accident on Saturday evening resulted in one minor injury after a westbound vehicle on Interstate 80 slid into a ditch near the 258 milemarker.

Stoolman noted that, ironically, the fire department responded to three field fires before the snow began to fall.

Temperatures during the cold streak that started last Wednesday reached lows around 10 degrees with some wind chills reaching -15 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Lows are expected to increase to above freezing this weekend with a chance of rain, according to Weather.com.
