Joan M. Hatfield, 80, a resident of Davenport, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2014, at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street, Davenport. She passed surrounded by her family.

Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Joan were Friday, Dec. 5, 2014, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 417 Main Street, Davenport. Burial was in Davenport Memorial Park. The family greeted friends Thursday at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport.

Joan Marie Ellison was born April 14, 1934, in Iowa City, Iowa, a daughter of Glenn W. and Anna M. (Costello) Ellison. She was united in marriage to Gerald Dean “Red” Hatfield on April 24, 1954, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Davenport. He preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 2000; they had celebrated nearly 46 years of marriage at the time of his passing.

Joan was a caring and nurturing woman, and was proud to have helped with in-home day care for 28 years. She had also been a teacher’s aide in the Davenport School System for 10 years.

She was a member of the church, and was a willing and dedicated volunteer for both the school lunch buddy program and the Bix road race. She was proud to have been an award recipient of the American Cancer Society, receiving the distinction of Honorary Cancer Survivor.

Memorials can be made to the America Cancer Society or the National Kidney Foundation.

Surviving Joan are her children: Rev. Kerry (Carol) Hatfield, Davenport, Kathleen (John) Ward of Bettendorf, Kim Hatfield of Davenport, Kevin (Lynn) Hatfield of West Branch, Iowa, and Kris Hatfield of Davenport; grandchildren: Angel, Craig, Brock, Drew, Trent, Sara, John, Maddy and Kevin; four great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Alice Ellison of Davenport and Rae Ann Harr of St. Louis, Mo.; brothers-in-law Paul Jackson of Ramona, Calif., and Larry Hatfield of Davenport; and a dear friend, Wanda Miller of East Moline, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gerald; brothers John and James Ellison; and sisters Betty Jackson and Margaret Callahan. May they rest in peace.
