John Harry Roth, 66, of West Branch died Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015, at Bethany Lutheran Church in West Branch followed by lunch.

Graveside service were in the St. Michael’s Cemetery in Holbrook, Iowa. Visitation was Monday at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Branch. A memorial fund has been established. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.hendersonbarkerfuneralhome.com.

John was born July 7, 1948, in Denver, Colo., the son of Harry and Vivian Throckmorton Roth. He was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver. John retired from the Colorado National Guard. Following his retirement he was employed as a civilian supply specialist at the University of Colorado and later the University of Iowa. He moved to Iowa in 1991, met his future wife in 1992 and on Dec. 30, 1993, he was united in marriage to Mary Kathryn Gaffey in Holbrook, Iowa.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in West Branch and Chauncey Butler American Legion Post 514 in West Branch, where he served in many different capacities. He was an invited member of Forty & Eight in Mt. Pleasant. John sewed Blue Star banners that were hung in every state and three foreign countries, in addition to the Gold Star banner he made for the Sullivan Brothers. His greatest joy was his family.

Survivors include wife Mary Kathryn “Kathy” Roth of West Branch and her children, Ann (Matt) Brandewiede of Harrison, Ohio, John (Deedee) Wombacher of Iowa City, Bill (Lisa) Wombacher of Red Oak, Iowa, and Suzanne Krebs of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; mother-in-law Laura Gaffey of Iowa City; sister Elizabeth (Otis) Harris of New Kent, Va.; and brother Robert (Dona) Roth of Franktown, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 infant brothers.
