“The Polish Prince,” George “Bob” Batzkiel, 76, of Lowden passed away Sunday, March 1, 2015, in the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics with his family by his side.

Funeral services will be Thursday, March 5, at 10:30 a.m., Fry Funeral Home, Tipton. Burial with full military rites will follow in the Tipton Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Fry’s. A memorial fund has been established in his memory. Online condolences may be shared at www.fryfuneralhome.com.

Bob was born on Nov. 21, 1938, in Moline and was the son of Chester and Betty Crawford Batzkiel. On Oct. 24, 1959, Bob was united in marriage to Mary Jo DeMeyer in East Moline. Bob worked as a Moline Fireman from 1966 through 1976 and moved to Lowden where he and Mary made their home. Bob worked as a fisherman and metal worker and at John Deere; he then finished his career at HWH, working his way up to shop foreman before he retired in 1999.

Bob is survived by his wife, Mary Jo; four daughters: Mary Wynkoop of Clarence, Iowa, Cheryl (Bill) Pierce of Wilton, Judy (Ward) Shontz of Moscow, and Cassie Mathias of Muscatine; two sons, Bob, Jr. (Sue) Batzkiel of Lowden and Bill (Cindy) Batzkiel of West Branch; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; sister Robin Nordinger of Hollywood, Fla.; and two brothers, John Batzkiel and Charlie Batzkiel of Atkinson, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Jennie and great-grandson Jaden.
