Robotics team beats about half of 63

West Branch High School’s robotics team, 5041, finished in “about the middle of the pack” of 63 teams at the regional competition April 1-4 in Minnesota.

“We did all right,” team mentor and Project Lead the Way instructor Matt Cain said. “We had no technical issues during any matches and the students worked great together.”

This year’s competition was called Recycle Rush, and robots built by the teams had to move and stack recycle bins and tote boxes, as well as place “litter” (pool noodles) in the containers.

FIRST Robotics Competition Game organizers built a 27-by-54-foot field that included a “landfill zone,” for finding the containers, and “auto zone,” for scoring points based on how many totes the robots could stack, how many recycle bins could be stacked on totes, and how many pieces of litter could be placed in the bins. Robots could throw litter onto the side of the opposing team, and anything not picked up at the end of the 2 1/2-minute round added to their points.

“It was a great learning experience and (the team) is excited to improve for next year,” Cain said of the 10K Lakes FRC Regional Competition.

He said two of the teams traveled from China, while three teams came from Iowa and the rest came from Minnesota.
