Editorial: Kudos to boys basketball
Op-Ed · April 16, 2015

West Branch High School’s boys basketball team finished strong in another year of tough competition in the River Valley Conference South division.

The team finished with a winning record of 12-11 overall and a 10-4 record in the RVC South.

A closer look at the RVC South games shows the highly competitive and comparative strength of West Branch and the top teams. Regina finished first with the overall best record, with Wilton finishing second overall. West Branch tied for third overall with Tipton. Yet while the Bears did not mark up a win over the No. 2 Beavers, they beat the No. 1 team in one of their three contests with the Regals.

West Branch’s four losses within the South Division only came at the hands of the top two teams. Every other game against Tipton, Durant, West Liberty and Mid-Prairie ended with a win.

Bears — you had a good year.

And you showed that give-it-your all effort coaches try to get everyone on the team to give, the kind that teaches each player they can be better than their own expectations.

The RVC South division awarded Brad Arp and Mason Hays with spots on the Elite Team and Lucas Lamont earned an All-Conference Honorable Mention.

The team’s 43.4 percent field goal average was second best, its 116 three-pointers ranked third best, its 31.4 percent three-point average was fourth best and its 69.3 percent free-throw average is second best in the RVC South.

Those three-point basket totals placed the Beards fifth overall in the entire River Valley Conference 13-team superconference, and the team’s free-throw percentage is second best in the superconference.

So congratulations to the West Branch varsity boys basketball team on another great year on the court. You’ve got a lot of fans.
