To Moms who make life better ...
Op-Ed · May 07, 2015

Here’s to the mothers, old and young, of West Branch who help make this community a better place to live if by nothing other than supporting their families and helping children become happy and productive people.

While we mark Mothers’ Day on Sunday, we cannot forget that mothers are mothers all year, every day, whether they stay at home or go into an office or labor along an assembly line.

Good mothers are the kind that persevere and help build discipline in their children. While we don’t necessarily think the Baltimore mom who yanked her son out of the riot crowd needed to slap him around, we cannot blame her for tough love when she saw him get out of line.

For most moms, personality differs around family than in public. So one of the more revealing measures of parents is how their children behave and treat others. When we see children who show a capacity for patience, self-control and a general positive attitude, that tells us a lot about life around the house. Mothers who know “love” in part means teaching children to appreciate what they have earn a lot of respect in the long run.

Good mothers talk us into trying new things, sticking with the team, keeping on task with homework, standing up for friends, visiting classmates going through hard times and, yes, eating our veggies.

Good mothers follow an unchanging standard that builds character in their children and set an example for others. These types of mothers make their husbands proud, make teachers grateful and make coaches happy.

So here’s to those mothers who work hard to make sure they leave this world a better place than when they found it.

Keep on keeping on.
