Letter: Education needs more R&D money
Op-Ed · May 07, 2015

Looking for common ground for moving forward on the school funding issue.
I hope that one goal that many of us share is minimizing the number of people who need assistance from we, the government. Can education help us get closer to that goal? I know that it can.

Fiscal responsibility flows from education. Civic engagement flows from education. Good health choices flow from education.

If we see education from a business model, with a goal of strengthening our economy, we might want to consider the importance of research and development. We could commit funding to let educators try new approaches. We could value studies that show the importance of preschool, and proper nutrition, and redesign our system to invest our dollars earlier, where each dollar is maximized.

“Tax rates were higher than they should have been”? According to whom? Based on what? Compared to where, when?

Can we find a process to determine appropriate tax rates that are focused on long term goals?
