Charles Wallace Broyles Jr., 89, of West Branch died Monday​,​ July 6, 2015 at the Mechanicsville Nursing and Rehab Center.

A wake will be held Sunday, Aug. 2, at 2 pm at Beranek Park in West Branch. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Branch is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.hendersonbarkerfuneralhome.com.

Charles was born Oct. 2, 1925, the son of Charles Wallace Broyles Sr. and Mabel Beatrice Crotty. He honorably served in the U.S. Naval Reserves, during WWII as a Signalman Third Class on the Naval Destroyer USS Case.

He was united in marriage to Edith Hypes on July 30, 1948; they had two sons and a daughter. They later divorced.

He was united in marriage to Pauletta Woody on Dec. 23, 1971; they had one daughter. They later divorced, but remained close until the end of his life.

He was employed as a tinsmith for much of his life.

Charles enjoyed playing his banjo, with Bluegrass​ music being a major part of his life. He also enjoyed gardening, hunting, reading, and watching his favorite baseball team, the Atlanta Braves, on TV.

He is survived by his daughters Carolyn Cochran of Coralville and Rebecca (Kevin) Knoche of West Branch; son Bruce (Mona) Broyles of Santa Rosa, Calif.; seven grandchildren: Noah Leen, Sasha Leen, Brice Peterson, Nicole Goedken, Sarah Chapin, Megan (David Hoffman)​ Knoche, Hannah Knoche and Gabe Knoche; four great-grandchildren: Zach and Catherine Jones, Aspen and Aria Hoffman; sister Peggy Hutchison of Orlando, Fla.; and former wife Pauletta Broyles.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles W. Broyles Sr.; mother, Mabel C. Broyles; a son, Douglas Broyles; sister Charlotte Spangler; and a grandson, Neil Peterson.
