Jury duty scam warning
News · November 25, 2015

On Nov. 18, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office took several calls from the public stating they had been called by a deputy from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office informing them they had missed jury duty.

They were given options of either paying a fine or facing arrest. Callers were instructed to go to Wal-Mart or CVS and they would be instructed how to send the money.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office does not collect fines in this manner and would not ask the public to mail money or purchase any type of cash cards.

“This is a scam and the perpetrators are very convincing,” read a statement from the sheriff’s office.

In a press release, the sheriff’s department stated that the phone number currently being used by the scammers is 319-212-1443, “but it is possible that this number may change.”

The sheriff is working with state and federal authorities to investigate to try to stop the scam, said the release.

Those who receive such calls are told not to give out any information and to call the sheriff’s office at 319-356-6020. Cedar County residents should call the sheriff at 563-886-2121.
