Invoke: Thoughts on screening refugees before they reach Iowa ...
Op-Ed · November 25, 2015

We posted a question on Facebook and an unscientific poll on Twitter: What do you think of Gov. @TerryBranstad asking the US to screen Syrian refugees for possible terrorist infiltrators?

Poll received 17 votes:

Iowa safety first - 88 percent

No need to screen - 12 percent

Twitter

Blake Friis: Massive flaw. “Iowa’s Safety First” implies Syrian refugees pose a direct threat to Iowans. Prove that first.

Kandi Baylor: As it turns out — once the sensationalism and panic settles — it seems none of the terrorists in the Paris attackers were Syrian refugees. Screening should have always been in place — the ridiculous leap people have taken in response to the tragedy in Paris are the direct result of irresponsible media coverage. What’s new? ... Throw the current political climate in there and good luck ever knowing what is really going on. 7 Likes

Tony Wasion: Keep them out!

Jennifer Leslie: I love how people that consider themselves flag-waving Christians are the first ones not wanting the refugees. 11 Likes

Zak Neumann: They’re refugees, not immigrants. The federal government makes those decisions. It’s not up to the states. Melinda Wieland: The Screening Process will not work. ISIS cleared entire villages and then kept the paperwork for those villagers. Their ID’s are most likely from those they’ve already killed from those villages. Why are so many able-bodied men coming here - why aren’t they fighting for their country? Radical Islamist Jihadis. … The Federal Government wasn’t even able to keep track of the one person they brought in already. He was turned loose in Louisiana and days later they found him in Washington, D.C. And Yeah, it only took 19 hijackers to kill 1000’s of innocent Americans. Why aren’t these refugees going to the other Muslim countries? UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia — you would think they would want to live with other Muslims.

Alexis Johnson: I understand where the fear comes from, but the sick, dying, scared babies give me nightmares. How do we keep letting the kids suffer because the grown-ups can’t figure it out? 5 Likes

Dakota Kaalberg: I may not be that old but I think instead of accepting refugees we should first help the men and women that have served for this country before we help immigrants. 2 Likes

Norman Bickford: Not a Terry fan, but all refugees should be screened not because of the of the Paris incident. 2 Likes

Ted Miller: Should be doing it for a long, long time.

Barb Downing Evans: Do not let them in, period.
