4th-graders pick Cruz, Clinton
News · February 04, 2016

West Branch fourth graders held their own mock caucus on Monday and chose Ted Cruz for the Republicans and Hillary Clinton for the Democrats.

Teachers Blake Shultice’s and Laura Heithoff’s classes combined to study the top two polling candidates for each party.

The Republicans were narrowed down to Cruz and Donald Trump, while the Democrats were represented by Clinton and Bernie Sanders.

Cruz beat Trump 14-9, or 60.9 percent to 39.1 percent. Clinton beat Sanders 14-11, or 56 percent to 44 percent.

Shultice said the pupils used the Democrat caucus model “to give the students a chance to speak and try to persuade others.”

“I was very impressed by the thoughtful comments and respectful dialogue all around!” he said.

The pupils researched the candidates in advance on four key issues: immigration, national security, climate change/environment and poverty.

Shultice said the pupils chose one issue as their top concern, “and this guided their decision on (who) they wanted to caucus for.”
