Slick road contributes to crash
News · February 11, 2016

Slick conditions led to two vehicles bumping into each other Feb. 3 about 9:30 a.m. on southbound Oasis Road.
Melia D. Barbour, 53, of West Branch was driving her 2010 Mercedes ML360 “at a slow speed due to poor icy/frost covered road conditions,” according to a Johnson County Sheriff’s Department report.

Near Fairview Cemetery, her car was struck in the rear by the “middle driver side” of a 1999 Toyota Camry driven by Nicholas A. Schreiber, 17, of Iowa City.

Johnson County Ambulance Service personnel looked at Barbour and her passenger, Liam A. W. Barbour, 14, for possible injury, but both declined transport to a hospital, as did Schreiber.

Schreiber was cited for failure to stop in an assured clear distance,” according to the report. JCSD estimates damage to the Mercedes at $2,000, and damage to the Toyota at $3,000.

West Branch Fire Department was first on the scene, then a Johnson County road maintenance truck spread sand on Oasis Road to within a block of the accident.
