Charles John Ponce, 70, of West Liberty passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Funeral mass was Monday, April 4, 2016, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in West Liberty. Visitation was Sunday from at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty where a scripture service was held at 4:45. Burial with military honors was in the Mt. Charles was born Jan. 5, 1946, in Iowa City the son of John and Margaret (Reyes) Ponce. He was a graduate of West Liberty High School in the Class of 1964 and later attended community college and the University of Iowa until he enlisted in the Air Force. Chuck spent his career in the Air Force, being stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, Upper Heyford, Oxfordshire, England, Duluth International Airport, Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, Neb., and in Korea, retiring in 1991 as a staff sergeant. Following his retirement from the military, he worked for several communication companies and was sent to Afghanistan as a civilian contractor, retiring in 2002.
Chuck enjoyed running, bicycling and tinkering. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in West Liberty.
He is survived by two children: son Ryan (Hollie) Ponce of Omaha, Neb., and their children, Hunter, Isabella and Sophia, and daughter Amy (Robert) Bruce of Papillion, Neb., and their children, Maelee and Annaliese; three sisters: Mary Lou James of Kansas City, Mo., Barbara Ann (Doug) Calvin of Davenport and Marcella (Robert) Ponce Dewar of Atalissa.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
