Facing $338K shortfall, BOE OK’s $10 per pupil instructional fee bump
by Gregory R. Norfleet · News · April 28, 2016

Parents will pay an additional $10 per child in instructional fees after the West Branch Board of Education on April 11 approved the increase.

The increase will raise school revenues from about $20,000 to $25,000 per year to a predicted $35,000, Superintendent Kevin Hatfield told the school board.

The move will increase instructional fees for kindergarten through eighth grade from $40 to $50 per child, and high school student instructional fees will increase from $50 to $60 per child.

Hatfield said newest figures show the school district has to make up about $338,000 in lost funding due to a drop in enrollment, and the plan is a combination of budget cuts and revenue increases.

Hatfield noted that there will still be provisions on instructional fees for families who are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches.

“Once we stabilize the budget, we’d like to roll (instructional fees) back again,” the superintendent said.

Hatfield said the last time the school board changed its instructional fees was for the 2012-13 school year.
