Lions, Scouts clean ditches
News · April 28, 2016

On Sunday, April 24, the West Branch Lions Club and West Branch Boy Scouts teamed up to create a 13-member group that cleaned nearly three miles of ditches along Herbert Hoover Highway.

The group worked for about 2 1/2 hours for this “prolonged” Earth Day weekend in “nearly perfect weather,” according to a statement from Lions Club member Greg Humrichouse. The crew started at West Branch High School and worked their way westward.

“Not a lot of big items were found this time, but plenty of small items were removed for disposal or recycling,” Humrichouse said.

Boy Scouts and leaders included Mark Heick, Ryan Heick, Logan Heick, Dustin Harrison, Tanner Harrison and Randy Boyd. Lions Club members included President Mike Quinlan, Mike Scaffinger, Tony Warren, Nancy Warren, Jerry Fleagle and Greg Humrichouse.

The team also included one University of Iowa football player, No. 72 Brant Gressel, “who was cross-training a day after the UI Hawkeye football spring game,” Humrichouse noted.

“Thanks to the Johnson County Secondary Roads Department for loaning safety vests, signs, and supplying the orange trash bags,” read the statement.
