West Branch Police Department responded 7:52 a.m. Oct. 18 to the intersection of Herbert Hoover Highway/Main Street and Cedar-Johnson Road, near West Branch High School, for a minor crash involving two vehicles.

According to a police report, Kari L. Zuniga, 40, of North Liberty had stopped her 2011 Chevrolet Traverse in the eastbound lane of Hoover Highway waiting to turn left onto Cedar-Johnson Road. At that time, a second vehicle, a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire driven by Destiny K. Baines, 16, of Iowa City struck the rear of Zuniga’s SUV. WBPD reports that Baines was driving over the hill, “looked down, looked up and noticed the vehicle stopped in front of her” but could not slow down in time. There were no injuries to either driver, nor to the three children in Zuniga’s back seat, ages 19 days to 5 years. Baines was cited for failure to have control. Baines’ vehicle received about $2,000 in damage, which police listed as “severe” enough to total the car; Zuniga’s car received about $2,500 in damage to the rear and was drivable. WBPD Chief Mike Horihan said several people from the school came out to offer help, like school nurse Traci Fryauf and WBHS counselor Taylor Larson.
