News · October 27, 2016

The Cedar County Assessor’s Office would like to remind Cedar County property owners that the November 1st deadline is approaching for the family farm tax credit.
This tax credit is applicable to land used for agricultural or horticultural purposes in tracts of ten or more acres and/or tracts of less than ten acres if contiguous to qualifying land of ten or more acres. The owner(s) or designated person (family member) must be actively engaged in farming at least half the tract(s).

The county board of supervisors shall approve an application if the owner(s) are eligible as specified in Iowa Code 425A.3 ss 2:

• If they are actively engaged in farming on more than half of the tract(s);

• The tract was subject to a federal program pertaining to agricultural land; and

• All other requirements of eligibility in the Code have been met.

This is a one-time sign-up if there are no changes in ownership and/or the designated person actively engaged in farming the property and/or the number of acres being farmed remains the same.

The land must be owned by related parties In order to be eligible and the designated person(s) actively engaged in farming at least half the tract must be the owner, spouse, parent, grandparent, great-grant parent, child, grandchild, step child, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, nephew or niece. ‘Actively engaged in farming’ means the designated person is personally involved in the production of crops and livestock on an eligible tract on a regular, continuous and substantial basis.

Applications are available at www.cedarcounty.org (click on ‘County Forms,’ then ‘Assessor Forms’) or they can be obtained from the Cedar County Assessor’s Office located in the Cedar County Courthouse.

Feel free to contact the assessor’s office with any questions pertaining to this or other tax credits or exemptions administered by the assessor’s office.
