Shirley Weinard, 83, Hiawatha

On Nov. 19, 2016, our mother, Shirley Weinard, was granted her wish to dance with the love of her life once again.

Shirley Ann (Korte) Weinard, 83, passed away at the Donna and Dennis Oldorf, Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa.

She was born in St. Cloud, Minn., on June 9, 1933, the daughter of Matilda (Mueller) Korte and Isadore W. Korte. After graduation from Cathedral High in St. Cloud, Minn., she worked for Northwestern Bell in St. Cloud, Minn., as a telephone operator, later transferring to Indiana Bell in Indianapolis, Ind. She transferred to Illinois Bell in Rock Island in Rock Island, Ill.

In April 1958, she met the love of her life and three months later, on July 19, 1958, she married LaVerne (Chub) Weinard in Davenport, Iowa. After his death in 1973, she went to work for Northwestern Bell in Iowa City, Iowa, and ended her career with AT&T in Davenport, Iowa, retiring in 1991 with 25 years of service.

After retirement, Shirley pursued a second career opening an in-home daycare. She was known as ‘Grandma Shirley’ to dozens of little ones over the next 20 years.

Shirley was an avid reader, always with a book in hand. Her hobbies included crocheting, sewing crafts, puzzles, crossword puzzles and participating in craft shows for more than 10 years. She loved the ballet and opera.

Her family was first and foremost in her world. She was the kindest, most generous, loving mother to her three children: Anne Weinard (Brent Proctor) of West Liberty, Iowa, Audrey Gennevieve Weinard of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Angela Katherine (Bill) Lehman, North English, Iowa.

She is also survived by six grandchildren: Jacob Ady (Kim) Lehman of Conesville, Iowa, Samantha Leigh (Jake) Kabela of West Branch, Iowa, Megan Katherine (Jason) Lee of North English, Iowa, Jordyn Lea Weinard of Des Moines, Iowa, Josh Proctor of Denver, Colo., and Haley Proctor, Austin, Texas. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Chason John Maier, Gentry Ann Maier and Brooks Daniel Kabela of West Branch, Iowa, Jaxen Ady Lehman of Conesville, Iowa, Walker Theodore Lee of North English, Iowa, and Baby Kabela due April 2017; and one sister, Patricia (George) Hughes of Hopkins, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 15 years, Chub Weinard; three brothers: Donald (2015), LeRoy (2104) and Fredrick (2013); a grandson, Nic Proctor (1998); and a great-grandson, Corbin Thomas Maier, in 2012.

A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016, at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. A memorial visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, 2016, at the funeral home and one hour prior to service Saturday. Inurnment will be at Oakridge Cemetery in West Liberty. A memorial fund has been established.
