West Branch High School on Jan. 31 honored junior Tatum Koenig and senior Cooper Kabela for both reaching the 1,000-point milestone in recent games.
Koenig, coached by Jarod Tylee, scored her 1,000th point Jan. 24 in a game against Fairfield (a 67-60 loss).

She reached this milestone just four days after Kabela reached the 1,000-point mark.

Kabela, coached by Tom Burger, reached the 1,000-point milestone Jan. 20 in a game against Bellevue (a 70-63 win).

“I think it’s pretty uncommon for that to happen,” Burger said of two student athletes at the same school reaching that milestone so close together.

At the ceremony, both Koenig and Kabela received basketballs signed by teammates and plaques.

Superintendent Kevin Hatfield said, to open the ceremony, “It’s very, very rare to have someone score 1,000 points in their (high school) career. It’s really rare for both of them to do it within a week of each other. And it’s really rare when one of them is a junior. So we’re really proud of these two athletes, but not only because (of their accomplishments) ... but because they are super people.” Each athlete was announced, then their families joined them for pictures.
