West Branch Middle School eighth-grade boys basketball team won two and lost two in recent action.

Against Mid-Prairie, the A team lost 41-29. Despite the loss to the unbeaten Golden Hawks, the team narrowed the difference to 29-25 with five minutes left to the game.

Scoring: Gavin Hierseman 8, Cael Fiderlein 4, Jeff Bowie 14, Bryce Pickett 3.

The team shot 5-9 from the free-throw line, had 16 rebounds, 2 blocks, 3 steals, 6 assists and 8 turnovers.

In the B game, West Branch won 28-21.

Scoring: Kaleb Sexton 9, Trey Schutte 2, Matt Westcott 4, Dominic Culver 5, Jack Buol 4, Harold Blakey 2, Wade Holmes 2.

The team shot 2-9 from the free-throw line, had 27 rebounds, 2 blocks, 12 steals, 6 assists and 16 turnovers.

“ I was happy the way we battled back against undefeated Mid-Prairie in the second half and had their lead down to four late in the A game. We handled their full-court press much better than the first time we played them,” Coach Rich Stout said. “In the B game, we had seven different players score as we got the win.”

Against Tipton, the A team won 46-37.

Scoring: Kelby Burger 4, Gavin Hierseman 2, Cael Fiderlein 9, Simon Palmer 11, Jeff Bowie 18, Bryce Pickett 2.

The team shot 10 for 19 from the free-throw line, had 15 rebounds, 2 blocks, 8 steals, 10 assists and 9 turnovers.

In the B game, West Branch lost 24-21.

Scoring: Cael Fiderlein 3, Bryce Pickett 5, Kaleb Sexton 4, Dominic Culver 6, Jack Buol 3.

The team shot 5 for 14 from the free-throw line, had 19 rebounds, 17 steals, an assist and 11 turnovers.

“We played our best A game in getting the win at Tipton. Our press break led to a lot of easy baskets, shot 17-32 from the field and defensively we did a good job defending their pick-and-roll,” Stout said. “The B game was back and forth and came down to the last possession. Our guys played hard.”
