Minor injuries from wreck
News · March 23, 2017

West Branch Fire Department responded to the scene after a sport utility vehicle heading eastbound rolled over about 10:15 a.m. on Interstate 80 near the 253 milemarker.

Fire Chief Kevin Stoolman said the rollover trapped one adult and four children and firefighters rescued the five from the vehicle and found them with minor injuries.

West Branch Police Chief Mike Horihan noted that several WBFD cadets responded to assist and comforted the family.

Horihan said firefighters had to cut out the windshield to help the mother escape, while the children were handed up through an open window.

The SUV had Illinois plates; the children ranged from 4 to 10 years old, Horihan said. Stoolman said Johnson County Ambulance Service transported them to a nearby hospital.

Johnson County Sheriff’s Department and Iowa State Patrol also responded to the scene.

Further details were unavailable at press time.
