The West Branch girls track and field team won their home meet April 13, the Chad Gates Memorial Invitational.
The win came despite an injury to a main component of the team.

Team scores: 1) West Branch 144, 2) Wilton 128, 3) Lone Tree 79, 4) Alburnett 66, 5) Calamus-Wheatland 49.50, 6) Wapello 44.50

“We had a setback Wednesday (April 12) at practice when Paige Miller injured her groin muscle,” West Branch Co-head Coach Carol Lumpa said. “We told the team that we didn’t have one girl to replace her, but that everyone needed to step it up a notch, and we still had a shot to win this meet.

“The girls really responded to that. We, as their coaches, were really proud of them. The girls finished with seven first-place finishes and seven second-place finishes. The girls also had nine season bests.

“We still have a lot of work and improving to do, but we are really seeing positive strides in that direction. We hope to get Paige back soon. We also want to thank all of the staff and volunteers that make a track meet work. It takes a village.”
