Worrell’s father likes park name
News · April 27, 2017

Alfred J. Worrell, father of the late Mayor Mark Worrell, said “I think it would be a great honor to name the park after my son.”

The elder Worrell called the West Branch Times on Monday afternoon following a April 20 story that the West Branch City Council voted to name the land in Pedersen Valley, as well as the recreation center planned for that land, “Cubby Park - In Memory of Mark Worrell.”

Worrell served on the city council for 17 years, then served as mayor for about two years before he passed away in 2015. “Cubby” had been his nickname.

Alfred Worrell said he had never talked about the Pedersen Valley property with his son nor had he talked about playgrounds or ball fields in general, but said it would still be “a big honor” to see the park with his son’s name.

The city purchased for $375,000 in July 2012 about 22 acres of property in the western subdivision, 18 of which was planned for park space.

Mark Worrell spearheaded the purchase of the land just west of Crestview Nursing and Rehab.
