Marilyn A. Cook, 80, of West Branch, Iowa, passed away Sunday, April 23, 2017, at Lantern Park Care Center in Coralville. Marilyn was an extremely devoted mother and grandmother who touched hundreds of lives through her nursing career. If there was a school event that included her children or grandchildren, you could be assured she would be sitting in the school bleachers supporting the event.

Marilyn Arlene Cook was born Aug. 18, 1936, in West Liberty, Iowa the daughter of Sigurd and Alberta (Hemingway) Jensen. Following the death of Marilyn’s father at an early age, Alberta married Victor Petersen, who raised Marilyn and her four siblings. She was a graduate of West Branch High School in 1954 and took her Nurses Training at Mount Mercy in Cedar Rapids, graduating in 1957.

She spent more than 40 years working as a nurse and nursing supervisor in the Pediatrics and ENT departments. She began her career at Mercy in Cedar Rapids, then worked at Crestview Care Center in West Branch and Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, where she retired in 2000.

She enjoyed collecting and showing antiques at the county and state fairs. She also proudly displayed an extensive Christmas village collection each holiday season. She has traveled the world with family and friends to Hawaii, Japan, California, Massachusetts, Australia and Alaska. She loved to watch her grandchildren in all their activities at school and would mix in an occasional visit to the local casino. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in West Branch.

Survivors include three children: Mike (Laura) Cook of West Branch, Mark (Glenda) Cook of Nichols and Marv (Tracy) Cook of Iowa City; eight grandchildren: Sam Perkins, Clay Cook, Cole Cook, Maxx Cook, Makenna Cook, Andrew Cook, Logan Cook and Ashton Cook; brother Carl (Dorothy) Jensen of Sumner, Texas; sister Elaine Siddell of Iowa City; and sister-in-law Shirley Jensen of West Branch.

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather Victor, grandson Myles, brother Bill Jensen, and half-sister Bonita Kruse.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday April 28, 2017, at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Branch. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
