Cedars Edge hosts girls, but visitors prevail

The visiting Wilton girls golf team edged out West Branch’s girls golf team when the Bears hosted their first home meet in two years at the West Branch golf course.

The Beavers upset the Bears 211-218 on April 18, the first home meet for either high school golf team since the 2015 season.

“It’s so great to see the course ‘hopping’ with golfers,” Head Bears Coach Jan O’Neil said. “I see so many people with smiles on their faces just every time I walk in there. The girls were so excited to finally be able to play at home again. They’ve been waiting a long time for this and it’s great to have a place we can call home.”

Sydney Lamont led the team with 50, enough to earn runner-up medalist honors at Cedars Edge Golf Course.

Other varsity scores: Claire Bridges 53, Aleah Rocha 56, Ashley Riley 59, McKenna Walsh 62, Drew Perkins 60.

Lamont’s score on the nine holes came with a birdie on hole No. 5, shooting a two on the par-3 with her father, Darin, standing nearby.

“Sydney was really excited to ‘almost have a hole-in-one,’” O’Neil said. “She was pretty tickled her dad was there to see it, too. Birdies can be pretty rare for us so we like to celebrate those accomplishments!”

Bridges shot par on No. 3 and Riley shot par on No. 9. But O’Neil saw much more potential than just those two holes.

“Actually I think looking at the scores and seeing ten girls shoot in the 50’s shows us we’ve got a lot of depth,” she said. “With some hard work and extra playing time over the summer, those scores can easily come down even further. I love the potential and the possibilities for all of us.”

This is notable since many of the West Branch players have not played a nine-hole competition at Cedars Edge.

“Our averages keep going in the right direction,” O’Neil said. “Hopefully that continues!”

West Branch also put junior varsity golfers on the course that day: Abby Fryauf 56, Amanda Budreau 58, Jessica Myers 65, Annika Olson 57, Lauren Nalan 63, Maddi Luneckas 57, Lexie Clemens 57, Mattie Hills 69, Hannah Westcott 58, Skylar Oxley 71, Maggie Wilson 72, Sarah Cohn 77.
