Girls in five events head to state meet

The West Branch girls track and field team will send four athletes in five events to the state track and field meet in Des Moines May 18-20.


Earning their state berths with first-place finishes at the state-qualifying meet at Tipton May 11 were two relay teams and Paige Miller in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:06.34. The relays that placed first were the shuttle hurdle relay team of Tatum Koenig, Kaiya Luneckas, Jaylen Votroubek, and Miller who finished their race in a season-best 1:08.51. The same four were first-place finishers in the 4x200 in a season-best time of 1:48.49.

The 4x400 team with Koenig, Votroubek Luneckas, and Miller placed second with a season-best time of 4:08.09. Koenig was fourth in the long jump with a season-best distance of 16-02, making the cutoff for the state meet.

“The girls really took care of business,” West Branch Co-head Coach Carol Lumpa said. “The girls had six season bests, four of them coming from the state qualifiers. That is what you need to do this time of year.

“We are very excited about competing in the state track and field meet next week. We go into the meet with Paige Miller at the number-one seed in the 400 hurdles. The shuttle hurdle relay is seeded number three, the 4x400 is seeded number four, the 4x200 is seeded number 11, and Tatum Koenig is seeded number 18 in the long jump.

“Paige Miller and Tatum Koenig have qualified in four events, an Kaiya Luneckas and Jaylen Votroubek will team up with them in the three relays. We will be taking four alternates: Haley Mullinnix, Autumn Kolpin, Riley Vaughan, and Aubrey Baylor.

“We were so proud of all the girls, and we are ready to represent West Branch Girls Track and Field in Des Moines.”

Placing third at the meet in the high jump was Mikayla Prusha who had a jump of 4-10.

The sprint medley team of Taylor Thein, Mullinnix, Votroubek, and Luneckas placed fourth in a season-best time of 1:55.54.

The distance medley team of Vaughan, Kolpin, Baylor, and Clare Muckler finished their event in 5:02.54 for sixth place.

Thein, Mullinnix, Vaughan, and Kolpin placed eighth in the 4x100 with a time of 56.50.

In the shot put, Mackenzie Heise finished seventh, putting the shot 33-03.25. Kaylee Montgomery put the shot 27-07.50.

Montgomery had a throw of 82-09.00 in the discus.

Thein had a jump or 13-11 in the long jump.

In the dashes, Mullinnix finished the 100m dash in 14.08, and Grace Kerchner finished in 15.71. In the 200m dash, Autumn Kolpin finished in 30.11. Kerchner ran the 400m dash in 1:19.01, and Lexie Whede finished in 1:19.60.

Taylor Boelk turned in a season-best time in the 800m run. She finished the race in 2:48.90. Aurora Eilertsen finished in 2:56.17.

Baylor ran the 110m hurdles in 19.26.
