Boys track qualifies for two state events

The West Branch boys track and field team will send two events to the state meet in Des Moines May 18-20.


The state-qualifying meet was held May 11 at Tipton.

Team scores: 1) Northeast 114, 2) Regina 88, 3) Camanche 82, 4) North Cedar 75, 5) Tipton 74, 6) Mediapolis 73, 7) Wapello 68, 8) Wilton 54, 9) West Branch 48.10) Columbus 35, 11) Highland 13, 12) Louisa-Muscatine 11

“We competed really well down at the state-qualifying meet at Tipton,” West Branch Head Coach Taylor Larson said. “the two highlights of the meet for us (were) the 4x800 relay and Cooper Kabela in the 110m high hurdles.

“The team of Jordan Baldwin, John Yates, Atlas Kolpin, and Ben Thompson ran a season-best by 13 seconds (in the 4x800) and placed second at the meet. Ben Thompson ran a 2:02 split. It was an impressive race by all four student athletes.

“Cooper Kabela ran a 15.57 and qualified as a wild card for the state track meet in the 110m high hurdles.”

The 4x800 team’s time of 8:26.67 was good for second place. Kabela’s time was good for third place and was just 0.03 from second place. Billy Friis ran the 110m hurdles race in 19.13, a personal-record time.

In the dashes, Tanner Lukavsky ran the 100m dash in 12.57 for fifth place. Jonathan Wargo ran the race in 1.398. Lukavsky was seventh in the 200m dash with a time of 24.93. Jace Gongora ran the race in 30.16. Keegan Sotelo finished the 400m dash with a personal-record time of 1:03.00, and Dakota Kaalberg had a personal-record time of 1:04.43.

The sprint medley team of Wyatt Goodale, Chris McTaggart, Lukavsky, and Trey Eagle finished in seventh place with a time of 1:44.94.

John Muckler placed sixth in the 3200m run, finishing in 11:16.70 and ran the 1600m run in 5:08.12, a personal record.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Kabela, Ben Kyllingstad, Luca Passeri, and Goodale placed third in 1:03.47. “(They) ran a season-best of over two seconds,” Larson said. “They narrowly missed qualifying for state.”

In the distance medley, Goodale, McTaggart, Jacob Graves, and Will Martin finished with a time of 4:20.98.

Baldwin was fifth in the 800m run with a time of 2:08.19, and Zach Thompson finished in 2:22.53.

In the 400m hurdles, Graves finished in 1:03.58, and Wargo finished in 1:14.67.

In the 4x100, Goodale, Kabela, Passeri, and Lukavsky finished with a time of 47.88.

The 4x400 team of Luke Lenoch, Eagle, B. Thompson, and Yates finished in fifth place with a time of 3:40.47. “The 4x400 team ran a season best by over four seconds,” Larson said.

Lenoch was sixth in the long jump with a jump or 19-05.50.

Cole Tisinger was third in the discus with a throw of 138-10.

Jacob Barnhart put the shot 40-04.75. “Barnhart threw a personal record in the shot put,” Larson said. “He really improved over the last two weeks of the season.”

“We had a great night running, and we saw a lot of progress throughout the year by all of our student-athletes,” Larson said. “As coaches, we are very proud of these gentlemen and could not ask for anything better out of them.”
