Memorial Day events scheduled around West Branch

Once again, local groups will host several activities to mark Memorial Day on Monday, May 29.


• 8 a.m. The American Legion Chauncey Butler Post 514 will host a brief ceremony in downtown West Branch at Appreciation Park.

• 9 a.m. Memorial Day Mass at St. Bridget’s, 2136 St. Bridget’s Road, Solon.

• 9 a.m. Legion ceremony at West Branch cemetery

• 10:30 a.m. Legion ceremony with guest speaker and patriotic music at West Branch High School.

• 2 p.m. The Eastern Iowa Brass Band will perform a free concert on the front lawn of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library-Museum.

According to information from St. Bridget’s, visitors who attend the Mass are encouraged to bring lawn chairs “to help us celebrate ... our deceased veterans and loved ones.”

All are welcome to gather in the cemetery, and the church will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with a short program to follow. Light refreshments will be served.

According to a Library-Museum press release, the Eastern Iowa Brass Band has performed for more than 25 years, entertaining audiences throughout Iowa, the Midwest and even beyond.

The 35-member band performs a repertoire that features original works for brass band, as well as arrangements of well-known orchestral and wind band literature.

Soloists are frequently featured on concert programs which also include marches, medleys, hymn tune arrangements, folk songs, Broadway show tunes and novelty pieces. Members of the EIBB come from all over Eastern Iowa.

“As the only brass band of this type in Iowa, the EIBB presents a truly unique musical experience,” reads the release.

Currently on display at the Herbert Hoover Museum is the temporary exhibit, American Presidents: Life Portraits. C-SPAN created this exhibit in partnership with Mediacom which features portraits of each president painted by artist Chas Fagan.

Accompanying each portrait is a personal object, a biographical sketch, information about the first lady and photographs from the White House Historical Association.

The Herbert Hoover Presidential Museum is located in West Branch, Iowa, ¼ mile off I-80 at Exit 254. The Museum is open daily from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. Regular admission is charged to go through the Museum galleries.
