Storm causes damage in country, city's edge

West Branch Fire Chief Kevin Stoolman said storm spotters did not report seeing a tornado when a strong thunderstorm passed through the area May 17, but a 60-mile-per-hour wind spread damage mostly in the countryside.
The southeast corner of a roof was torn off a new office building at Cedar County Co-op. General Manager David Summers said the building, finished in September, lost insulation as well.

Resident Lisa Bickford of 350th Street, west of Greenview, posted pictures on Facebook showing home damage that included a branch impaling her western wall, debris speared into the exterior and roof damage.

Resident Dan Pedersen, about a mile west of the Cedar-Johnson county line, lost two full-grown evergreens.

John Kuddes on Lower West Branch Road had a large section of a 40- to 50-foot hickory tree fall on his house, forcing him and his daughter to find a temporary home.

Kuddes said he saw a funnel cloud across the street just three years earlier. “We’ve had some pretty good winds and hardly a stick in the yard,” he said.
