W. Liberty comes from behind to beat Bears
by Norv and Mary Coblentz · Sports · June 15, 2017

The West Branch baseball team lost both games of a double header to West Liberty at West Liberty June 13.

The game scores were 6-5 and 10-7. West Branch held the lead in both games, but the Comets came back for the wins.

“I was really proud of the way we battled back because we had a really rough start there,” West Branch Head Coach Rich Stout said.

“Brett (Schiele) ate up a lot of innings and did a good job for us. It’s only the second time he’s thrown varsity for us.

“Our bats came through. What’s still hurting us is walking too many. When you’re playing this many young kids, you’re going to make mistakes.”

In the first game, the Bears held a 4-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth. West Branch was outscored 6-1 in the rest of the game.

In the nightcap, Pete Espensen doubled to left field with two outs but was caught stealing to end the half-inning.

The Comets scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Matt Paulsen led off the top of the second with a single to left field. Ted Bridges drew a base on balls. The next batter flied out to center field for the first out of the inning. Another fly ball to center field was the second out. Nick Schreiber singled to right field, and he batted in Paulsen. Another fly out to center field ended the half-inning.

The Comets loaded the bases in the bottom of the second but only scored one run. Trey Eagle made a terrific catch at third base to end the threat.

West Branch made up two more runs in the top of the third. Tanner Lukavsky singled to left field with one out. Espensen doubled to right field, and there were Bears on second and third bases. Matt Paulsen grounded out to second base, but T. Lukavsky scored. Bridges singled to right field, and Espensen scored. A fly out to right field ended the half-inning.

The Comets were retired in order in the bottom of the third on a groundout to Eagle at third base, a strikeout, and a groundout to Cale Donovan at second base.

West Branch scored another run in the top of the fourth. Nick Schreiber reached on an error with one out. Cade Aspelmeier and Eagle each singled to load the bases. T. Lukavsky flied out to score Schreiber. The next batter grounded out to end the half-inning.

The Comets did not score in the fourth inning. The first batter flied out to left field. A bunt single put one runner on, and he stole second base. The next batter lined out to T. Lukavsky at shortstop. He doubled off the runner at second for a double play to end the inning.

Three runs in the fifth for the Bears put them on top 7-6. Paulsen led off with a four-pitch base on balls. Bridges singled to right field. Brady Lukavsky got a bunt single to load the bases. A fly out to Center field by Schiele scored Paulsen. Schreiber singled to center field to load the bases again. The next batter hit into a fielder’s choice, and the lead runner was out at home. B. Lukavsky scored on a wild pitch. A strikeout and a line out ended the inning. The Bears had a one-run lead.

The Bears held the Comets in the bottom of the fifth. The first batter walked. The second batter grounded out, and the runner was caught in a pickle and tagged out by Eagle. A single was followed by a strikeout to end the inning.

The Bears were retired in order in the top of the sixth. Their one-run lead would not be enough. The Comets scored four in the bottom of the inning on three walks, a single, and a double.

West Branch got a two-out single by Schreiber to right field. Cade Aspelmeier singled to left field, but a fly out ended the game with a final score of 10-7.

“We showed a little toughness, a little resilience, something we haven’t done,” West Liberty Head Coach Troy Wulf said. “We’ve been talking about it. Last week, we had an opportunity to beat Northeast but we just couldn’t quite finish it. We talked about finishing the game and learning to win.”
