Softball team doubles up to beat Tipton

The West Branch softball team took both games of a double header from the visiting Tipton Tigers June 27.


The scores were 10-1 and 9-1.

“Our lineup has a lot of tools,” West Branch Head Coach Kaitlyn Mullarkey said. “Yesterday we came off a pretty hard day (losing two games at home to Mid-Prairie). I was pretty proud of how both our pitchers came back. They’re doing great, they’re working hard.”

Hanna Tisinger pitched for the Bears in the first game against the Tigers. West Branch retired the side in order in the top of the first. The first batter grounded out to DaLana Kron at shortstop. The second batter grounded out to Chloe Pence at third base, and Tisinger struck out the third batter.

In the Bears’ half of the inning, they scored three runs. Kron led off with a single and stole second base. Nicki Henson singled. With Kaylee Montgomery at the plate, Kron and Henson executed a double steal, then Montgomery reached on an error. Kron scored. Taylor Thein singled, and Henson scored. Maddy Hatfield hit into a fielder’s choice, and Montgomery was forced out at third base. The next batter grounded out, but not before Thein scored on a wild pitch. A ground out to second base ended the inning. West Branch had a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers singled to lead off the second. The next batter reached on a fielder’s choice with the force-out at second. Tisinger got two strikeouts to bring up the bottom of the second.

West Branch went three-up, three-down in the bottom of the second on a fly out to right field, a walk, a popout to the short stop, and a pickoff.

There was no score in the third inning. The first Tipton batter grounded out to Kron. The second struck out, and the third grounded out to Tisinger. Thein got a two-out double in the bottom of the inning, but a strikeout left her on base.

The Tigers loaded the bases in the fourth inning. The first batter grounded out to Kron. The second batter flied out to Thein in center field. The third batter singled, the next reached on an error, and the next batter drew a base on balls. With two outs and the bases loaded, a groundout to the pitcher ended the half-inning.

Mackenzie Heise led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, but a pop out, a groundout, and a fly out left her stranded.

The first Tipton batter of the fifth inning reached on an error. The second struck out swinging, A single to left field put two runners on. A strikeout and a groundout to Maddy Hatfield at third base left the runners on base.

West Branch scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Henson reached on an error with one out. Montgomery drew a base on balls, Thein hit a three-run homer over the left field fence. The next two batters flied out to center field. West Branch had a 6-0 lead.

Tipton scored one run in the top of the sixth. The first batter reached on an error and a single scored the run. Two groundouts and a strikeout ended the half-inning.

The Bears piled on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Lexie Peak singled to right field, Chloe Pence singled to right field, then the next batter popped out to the catcher. Kron singled to load the bases. Henson singled, and Peak and Pence scored. Henson advanced to second base on an error on the Tipton left fielder. Montgomery drew a base on balls. Thein singled, and Kron scored. Henson was picked off at third base, and a strikeout ended the inning. West Branch had a 9-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, the first Tipton batter singled. A groundout to Kron at shortstop was followed by a single to center field. A fly out to Thein in center field, and a groundout to Montgomery at first base ended the game with a 9-1 win for the Bears.

“Our team played pretty well, and our defense was a lot better than the last couple of games,” Tipton Head Coach Brooklyn Koranda said.

June 26 at West Branch

The Bears lost both games of a double header to Mid-Prairie. In their 8-5 loss, Taylor Thein was 4-4 at the plate with two doubles and an RBI. Nicki Henson batted in two runs. Kaylee Montgomery and Mackenzie Heise had an RBI each. In the other game, DaLana Kron was 3-4 at the plate with a triple. Annika Olson had an RBI. Henson scored a run, and Thein scored two runs.

At Regina June 29

The Bears lost both games of a double header to the 24-11 Regina Regals. In their 7-5 loss, Nicki Henson was 4-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI. DaLana Kron and Taylor Thein also batted in a run. In their other loss, Kron batted in two runs, and Henson, Kaylee Montgomery, and Mackenzie Heise also batted in a run. Heise and Lexie Peak were both 2-3 at the plate.
