Bears 10-run Warriors to open post-season

The Bears’ softball team won their first post-season contest by 10-running the Wapsie Valley Warriors at West Branch July 5 at West Branch.


The final score was 10-0.

“Coming into the game, seeing their record (online), it gave us a little bit of confidence, but we try not to focus on that,” West Branch Head Coach Kaitlyn Mullarkey said. “We came out hard, and we executed our game plan.”

There was no score in the first inning. The first Warrior batter grounded out to Kaylee Montgomery at first base. The runner stole second base, and the batter walked. A ground out to DaLana Kron at second base advanced the runner to third. A groundout to Lexie Peak at shortstop ended the half-inning.

In the bottom of the first, Kron singled to second base. Kron stole second, and Nicki Henson drew a four-pitch base on balls. The next batter was out on the infield fly rule. Montgomery hit into a fielder’s choice, and Kron was forced out at third. A strike out and a pop out ended the inning.

Pitcher Kaiya Luneckas got a strikeout in the top of the second. A walk, a strikeout, looking, and another walk put two runners on with two outs. The next batter popped out to Chloe Pence at catcher for the third out.

West Branch scored four runs in the bottom of the second. Courtney Jarrett doubled to right center field. She stole third base. The next batter popped out to third. Peak had an RBI groundout with Jarrett scoring. Kron singled to the pitcher and stole second base with Henson at bat. Henson reached on an error in left field, and took second on the throw home where Kron scored. Henson took third base on a wild pitch with Taylor Thein at the plate. Thein scored Henson on a single. With Montgomery at bat, Thien stole second base and third base. Montgomery singled, and Thein scored. The third out came on a groundout to the pitcher. The Bears led 4-0.

The third inning had no score. The first batter for the Warriors in the third walked, and the Bears brought in Hanna Tisinger to pitch. The runner stole second base, but H. Tisinger got a strikeout. The next batter struck out, and was thrown out on a dropped third strike. The runner ran to third on a passed ball and tried to take home. She was out at home trying to steal.

In the bottom of the third, Jarrett got a one-out single on a grounder to right field. The next batter hit into a double play to end the inning.

The first Warrior batter in the fourth inning grounded out to Peak at shortstop, and the next two batters were struck out by H. Tisinger, the first looking, and the second swinging.

The Bears scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth. The first batter flied out to center field. Kron singled on a grounder to the shortstop. Henson bunted in an attempted sacrifice and reached on the missed catch at first. Both runners were safe at second and third base on the error. Thein singled to left field, and Kron scored. Henson was out at home, and Thein took second base on the throw home. With Montgomery at bat, a fielding error allowing Thein to score. Heise reached on an error to put runners at first and second. Pence singled to center to load the bases, but a new pitcher and a strikeout ended the inning. West Branch had a 6-0 lead.

The Warriors did not score in the fifth. The first batter reached on an error. The next batter hit into a double play. Kron tagged the runner going to second, and threw to Montgomery at first. The next batter grounded out, shortstop to first base, to end the half-inning.

The Bears scored two more runs in the bottom of the first. Peak reached on an error with one out but was caught stealing. Kron drew a base on balls, and Henson walked as well. Thein was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Montgomery reached on an error, and Peak and Kron scored. The next batter lined out, but the Bears had an 8-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth, the first Wapsie Valley batter singled. H. Tisinger got a strikeout, then the runner was caught stealing for the second out. A fly out to center field ended the half-inning.

The Bears scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to reach 10 runs and end the game. Pence doubled to left center field. Taylor Tisinger came in to bat and doubled to left field. Jarrett ran for T. Tisinger. Pence scored. Jarrett scored when Maddy Hatfield reached on an error.

“They’re a great team,” Wapsie Valley Head Coach Liz Berman said. “They were working hard throughout the season. They did a great job, fought hard, and had a good season.”

Wapsie Valley stats: Lakin Joerger 1-2, 1 stolen base, 1 walk; Sammy Rohlfsen 1 stolen base, 1 walk; Anna Sauerbrie 1 walk; Brandi Marticoff 1 walk. Pitching: Anna Sauerbrie pitched 3 2/3 innings and took the loss for the Warriors. She gave up six earned runs on 13 hits. She walked one and struck out one. Kaci Beesecker pitched 1 1/3 innings. She gave up four runs, one earned, on two hits. She walked two and struck out one.
