Mary Alice McMahill Olsen, 95, passed away at Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty, Iowa, on July 16, 2017.
Visitation will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2017, at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. Mary was born on June 29, 1922, near Kidder, Mo., the daughter of William and Alice McMahill. During WWII, she and her sister, Doris, supported the war effort by working at the munitions plant in Kansas City, Mo. Verland and Mary were married on Feb. 17, 1944, at Troy, Kansas. They began farming near Cameron, Mo., and moved to the West Liberty area in 1952. In 1968, they purchased the West Liberty Gambles Store, retiring in 1988. Mary attended West Liberty Christian Fellowship and was a member of the West Liberty American Legion Auxiliary, serving as treasurer for many years.
Mary is survived by daughters Carol Campbell of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Patricia (Michael) Tharp, of West Liberty and Susan (William Craig) McMahon, of Washington, Iowa; one son, David (Linda) Olsen of Palo, Iowa; Robert Dewar, like a son, of West Liberty; sisters Anne Wolfe and Elanor Best of Missouri; nephew Kenneth (Linda) Minor of West Liberty; grandchildren: Tim Dewar, Scott Dewar, Lara Lozano, William Tharp, Thomas Tharp, Melanie Womachka, Andy Olsen, John Olsen, Jason Olsen and Christopher McMahon; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Verland; parents; three sisters and one brother.
