JCSO reports fake deputy scam
News · July 20, 2017

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office has taken reports from the public that they have received calls and/or messages from a person identifying themselves as a Deputy at the Sheriff’s Office, according to a press release.

The recipient is informed that they have missed jury duty or they have a warrant out for their arrest. They are given the option of either paying a bond/fine or turning themselves in to the jail.

“This is not the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office calling!” read the release. “Do not send money to anyone! The Johnson County Sheriff (nor) any employee of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office will never ask for money over the phone!”

The JCSO calls it a “scam.”

“The perpetrators are very convincing,” read the release.

The victims are directed to Wal-Mart, CVS, or another place where money transfers can be facilitated.

“The Sheriff’s Office will NEVER collect bonds or fines in this manner,” read the release.

The Sheriff’s Office has put out similar warnings concerning phone scams in the past.

“These phone scams seem to resurface with a different twist but ultimately seem to reach someone that loses money,” read the release. “We would ask that you help us spread the word, and let people know to not transfer money to these criminals.”

The JCSO encourages residents to not provide any information to such callers.
