The 2017 National Hoover-Ball Championships were the 30th annual competition.

The round robin competition was held Aug. 5 on the Hoover-Ball Courts in West Branch.

The weather was perfect and may have contributed to the large turnout.

“(The weather was great) for players and for spectators,” Co-commissioner Jarod Tylee said. “It’s a good event, and it happens because of the people out here (playing). We had a total of 40 teams playing today which is more than we’ve had the last couple of years.

“I feel like it’s gone pretty well. (Iowa Games) has helped with the organizational part, too. It’s been nothing but positive.”

In the Men’s Division, Three Brothers, Three Championships took the gold. Team members are Branden Shortt, Cole Cook, Clay Cook, and Sam Perkins. Donny’s Plumbing Repair and Installation was second for the silver. Team members were Brad Arp, Sam Aspelmeier, Lucas Lamont, Tyler Donovan, and Matt McIlrath. The bronze medal went to Johnston Landscaping/I Guess I’ll play. Team members were Mike Johnston, Mike Thomas, Phil Johnson, Drew Murphy, Nick Dogqeiler, Collin Lenton, Jack Rummells, Jake Pudenz, Alex Schwabe, and Michael Murphy.

In the Women’s Division, the Peacocks took the gold. Madi Meier, Haley Poula, Heather Poula, and Gabby Holmes were team members. Taking the silver was Jarod’s Finest. Team members were Allyson Simpson, Allie Russell, Abby Knoop, Madison Russell, and Becca Haganman. The Heave Ho’s got the bronze.
