Park pavilion talks continue

West Branch Parks & Recreation Commission will meet 7 p.m. Thursday in City Council Chambers, 110 Poplar Street, to continue discussions on the design of the Cubby Park pavilion.

The City Council discussed the pavilion at its Aug. 7 meeting. The council hoped to build the concession stand/restroom/storage facility for less than $200,000, but bids are coming in at about $326,000.

The pavilion is part of a bigger parks improvement project using $4 million approved by voters in a November 2015 election.

Parks & Recreation Director Melissa Russell said the city might consider spending a bit extra on the pavilion so long as the overall project stays under budget.

“If we could get something like that in our park it would be such a nice amenity,” Council member Mary Beth Stevenson said, referring to conceptual drawings by Martin Gardner Architecture.

The commission will also discuss on Thursday an chili supper on Halloween, the commission’s mission statement and other items.
