Giving to Booster Club jumped 50%
by Gregory R. Norfleet · News · August 17, 2017

West Branch All-Sport Boosters raised $47,000 during the 2016-17 school year, a figure more than 50 percent higher than average.

The Boosters will present a ceremonial check to the West Branch Community School District during Meet the Team Night, which starts 5:15 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at the Little Rose Bowl.

Most years, annual donations from the Boosters run about $30,000.

Lori Montgomery, president of the Boosters for that school year, said the group added a couple of new fundraisers, but the club determined that no one service or sale or event got the credit for the whole $17,000 extra.

“We just had a lot of really good support,” she said. “We worked really hard making sure that we limited any surplus of things this year. We were really keeping track of our stock.”

The Boosters raise money through working concession stands, Drive For School event through Brown’s West Branch car dealership, Bingo at Hoover’s Hometown Days, clothing orders, donations, painting Bear paws on driveways, auctioning parking passes and advertisements at the Little Rose Bowl. Last year, the group hosted a golf tournament for the first time, a joint project with the Fine Arts Council.

The Boosters noticed that they hit the $30,000 mark somewhere around the track season.

“Then baseball and softball came around and we were able to give more,” Montgomery said. “It’s pretty exciting to be able to do that for the student-athletes.”

The money will go into the school district’s activity fund.

“Everybody really did a great job supporting the Boosters,” she said.

Montgomery stepped away from the Boosters to take a break, but she encourages others to join. Those interested may contact Kathy Young at kathyyoung3@hotmail.com. The group meets at 6:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month at the West Branch High School library.

“New members are always welcome,” she said. “We’re always looking for new ideas and fresh energy.”
