One set close, but No. 9 Wilton prevails

In their first conference match of the season, the West Branch Bears fell Aug. 31 to ninth-ranked Wilton at West Branch in three sets.


The scores were 25-23, 25-14, and 25-18.

“We’re making more mistakes, playing less efficiently than we can be,” West Branch Head Coach John Walsh said. “We have the talent and we have the mentality to play better than this. We just have to transfer it from the practice gym into the matches.

“We’re having a little trouble doing that right now. We’re working things out. We did a lot of good things in those sets. The mistakes kind of overtook the positives. We’ll get back in the gym and work on being more efficient and controlling the ball a little bit better.”

In the first set, Wilton scored the first point at the net. Kaija Luneckas got a kill to tie the score at 1-1. The Beavers scored the next two points on a tap over and an ace. McKenna Walsh served, and Abbey Fryauf got a kill for a 2-3 score. Each team had an error, then Mackenzie Heise and Abby Fryauf got a block. The Beavers misplayed the ball to give the Bears a 5-4 lead. The Beavers got a back row kill to tie the set.

The Beavers served an ace then scored a point at the net for a 7-5 lead. Wilton hit the ball into the net, and Luneckas got a block for a 7-7 tie. A kill by Luneckas gave the Bears a one-point lead. A block by K. Luneckas and Mackenzie Heise made it 9-7, Bears.

Luneckas got a kill, and Heise and K. Luneckas got a block. A block by K. Luneckas put the Bears up 10-7. A kill by the Beavers and a kill by K. Luneckas made the score 11-8. Wilton hit the ball into the net. Trailing 12-8, the Beavers took a time out. Wilton scored the next four points on two kills and two West Branch errors for a 12-12 tie. K. Luneckas got a kill, then Wilton got a kill.

Wilton had a serving error, and the Bears misplayed the ball for a 14-14 score. Each team made two hitting errors for a 16-16 tie. Wilton failed to return a ball for a 17-16 West Branch lead. Fryauf got a kill, and Wilton was called for a carry twice. Trailing by 20-16, the Beavers took a time out. Fryauf scored at the net, then the Bears hit the ball out of bounds. Heise got a kill to put the Bears up 22-17. A West Branch error, a Wilton ace, and another Bears’ error made 22-20, and West Branch took a time out.

Three hitting errors and a block by Wilton made it 24-22, Wilton. Wilton misplayed the ball for a 24-23 Beavers lead. A Wilton kill ended the first set with a 25-23 Wilton win.

Wilton won the second set by a wider margin. Wilton started with a 6-1 lead with the Bears’ point coming on a block. Fryauf got a kill, then Wilton got a kill.

A West Branch hitting error, two aces by Wilton, and a Wilton carry made the score 10-3, Beavers. The Bears had a serving error, then Wilton hit the ball out of bounds. The Beavers scored two more points on a block and a West Branch violation. The Bears called a time out trailing 13-4. Fryauf got a kill, the Bears had a serving error, then Wilton scored the next three points on an ace, a West Branch violation, and a kill. A kill by Heise made it 17-6. A Wilton kill and a Wilton block was followed by a Wilton serving error. A kill by K. Luneckas made it 19-8. Each team made two errors, then Wilton got a kill.

A Wilton block went out of bounds, the Beavers got a kill, and Wilton had a serving error. An ace by Sophie Nopoulos made it 23-13. Maddie Luneckas got a kill, and Wilton took a time out. The final two points of the set came on a West Branch block attempt that went out of bounds and a carry call on the Bears. The score was 25-14 for the set and 2-0 in the match.

Wilton won the third set for the sweep. The first four points went to Wilton on a West Branch carry, two Wilton kills, and a Wilton block.

A Wilton serving error gave the Bears their first point of the set. The Bears had a serving error for a 5-1 Wilton lead. Wilton had a net violation, then Walsh served an ace. Wilton tapped the ball over for a point, then Fryauf scored a point at the net. West Branch hit the ball out of bounds, then Wilton misplayed the ball for an 8-4 score.

A Wilton block went out of bounds, then the Bears had a serving error. After a long rally, West Branch hit the ball into the net. The Bears scored a point, then the Beavers did not return the serve. A kill by K. Luneckas, a Wilton kill, a Wilton violation, and a hitting error by each team made the score 13-9, Wilton. Walsh served two consecutive aces for a 13-12 score, and Wilton took a time out.

A serving error was followed by a kill by Fryauf. A kill from the back row by K. Luneckas tied the set at 14-14. Wilton had a hitting error, and a serving error by the Bears made the score 15-15. Wilton got a kill then was called for a carry for another tie. A kill by K. Luneckas and a tap over point by the Beavers made it 17-17. Wilton got a kill, then the Bears hit the ball into the net.

West Branch took a time out, trailing 19-17. A kill by K. Luneckas brought the score to 19-18 and proved to be the final point scored by the Bears. Wilton scored the next six points for a 25-18 set win and a 3-0 win for the night.

“We built a lot of confidence last year being in really difficult situations,” Wilton Head Coach Brenda Grunder said. “I de believe our experience is paying off.

“Our goal is to, every time we step on the court, move forward.”
