Netters seek consistency after loss to WL

The Bears volleyball team fell in three sets to the sixth-ranked Class 3A West Liberty Comets at West Liberty Sept. 5.


Scores were 25-19, 25-17, and 25-12.

“When we passed the ball well — we showed some life,” West Branch Head Coach John Walsh said. “It turns out if you don’t serve well and you don’t pass well, volleyball’s a tough game. That’s what we found out tonight.

“It’s a work in progress. We’ve had times this season when we pass the ball really well and where we serve really well. We just need to get more consistent with those two parts of the game.”

The Comets scored the first four points in the first set on a couple of West Branch errors, a Comets kill, and a hit in the net by the Bears. West Branch’s first point came on a West Liberty error. The Comets hit the ball out of bounds for a 4-2 score. The Comets got a kill then West Branch hit the ball out of bounds. West Liberty had a double hit for a 6-3 score.

The Bears had a serving error, then Sophie Nopoulos scored a point for the Bears with a kill. Abbey Fryauf got a kill for a 7-5 score. A serving error by the Bears and another kill by Nopoulos made it 8-6. Each team had a serving error, then Brianna Morales had a kill. The Bears hit the ball out of bounds. Two aces by the Comets put West Liberty up 12-8.

The Comets served another ace then had a serving error. A West Liberty block try went out of bounds. A kill by Fryauf made it 13-11. The Bears had a serving error then hit the ball out of bounds. Maddi Luneckas scored a point at the net. The Bears had a net serve, then Kaiya Luneckas got a kill for an 16-13 score. Another net serve by the Bears put the Comets up 17-13. The Bears took a time out.

West Branch hit the ball out of bounds, then the Comets served two consecutive aces. K. Luneckas got a kill, then the Bears hit the ball out of bounds. West Branch took a time out trailing 21-14.

West Liberty had a net violation for a 21-15 score. A West Liberty block try went out of bounds. The Comets were called for a double hit. West Liberty scored twice then had a net violation. Each team scored a point, then the Comets got the win with an ace.

The final set score was 25-19, and the Comets took a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set the teams played to a 3-3 tie with the West Branch points coming on West Liberty errors. An error by each team made it 4-4. The Comets hit the ball into the net then had a double hit call. A kill and an ace by the Comets tied the set at 6-6. The teams traded points to the 9-9 mark with Courtney Jarrett serving an ace. The Comets served an ace for a 10-9 West Liberty lead. The Comets got a kill to extend their lead.

The Bears were called for a double hit, then M. Luneckas got a kill. The Comets were called for a net violation. The Comets got a kill, and took a 13-11 lead. The Bears hit the ball into the net, and the Comets returned the favor. West Liberty got a kill then had a serving error for a 15-13 score. West Liberty had a kill, and West Branch was called for a double hit. Trailing 17-13, the Bears called a time out.

The Bears hit the ball too far. West Liberty served three consecutive aces. The Bears took another time out. A net violation by the Comets, a hitting error by the Comets, and a double hit by the Bears made the score 22-15. The Comets got a kill then had a net violation for a 23-16 score. The Comets hit the ball out of bounds for a 23-17 tally. The Bears didn’t return the ball, then the set point came on a West Liberty ace. The final score was 25-17 for the second set. West Liberty had a 2-0 match lead.

The third set wasn’t even close. The Bears started the set with two errors. West Liberty had an error, then K. Luneckas served an ace to tie the score at 2-2. The Bears and the Comets traded errors, then the Comets tapped the ball over for a point. The Comets had a serving error, then a West Liberty block attempt went into the net. West Liberty scored the next seven points on a kill, an ace, a tap over, two West Branch errors, another kills, and an ace. The score was 12-5.

West Branch scored two points on a West Liberty serving error, and an ace by Fryauf, The Bears had a serving error for a 13-7 West Liberty lead. The Comets served another ace. The Bears didn’t return the ball twice for a 16-7 score. The Bears had a net violation, and the Comets had an ace for an 18-7 score. The Bears took a time out.

The Bears scored a point at the net. The Bears had a net serve, and the Comets served an ace. MacKenzie Heise got a kill for the Bears for a 20-9 score. The Comets had a hitting error and a double hit for a 20-11 score. K. Luneckas scored a point at the net for a 20-12 score. The Comets scored the final five points of the match on a West Branch error, a kill, an ace, and two more West Branch hitting errors for a 25-12 set score and a 3-0 match score.

“Ugly volleyball,” West Liberty Head Coach Ruben Galvan said. “There was a lot of excitement playing our first home game. Hopefully we can take care of jitters and play our game. We were serving tough.”
