Bears keep it close, but Knights win in 5

The Bears’ volleyball team took it to five sets before falling to the North Cedar Knights in Clarence Sept. 19.


Scores were 18-25, 25-21, 25-22, 20-25, and 12-15.

“(We played well) in stretches, and not so well in other stretches,” West Branch Head Coach John Walsh said. “We definitely didn’t make them earn all of their points tonight. We made our share of mistakes.

“We’re passing a little better so we can get better swings at the ball. We’re getting there.”

The Bears scored the first point in the first set on a kill by Sophie Nopoulos. The Bears hit the ball into the net and couldn’t recover for a 1-1 score. McKenna Walsh had a kill to put the Bears back on top. Then the Bears hit the ball out of bounds. The Knights hit a kill try into the net for a 3-2 West Branch lead.

The Knights hit the ball out of bounds, then the Bears had a net violation. North Cedar served the ball into the net for a 5-3 West Branch lead. North Cedar had a four hits call. The Knights got a kill and trailed 6-4. The Bears failed to return the ball, then North Cedar had a net violation. The Bears had a serving error and then two hitting errors for an 8-7 Knights lead.

Kaiya Luneckas got a kill, then the Knights had a net violation for a 9-8 West Branch lead. The Knights went on a run with a kill and three West Branch errors, to make it 9-12, Knights. The Bears took a time out. The Knights hit the ball out of bounds. Sophie Nopoulos cut the deficit to 11-12 with an ace. The Bears failed to return the ball, and the Knights had a net violation for a 12-13 North Cedar lead.

The Bears hit the ball into the net twice. North Cedar was too far over the net to give the Bears a point for a 13-15 Knights lead. Walsh served an ace. An error by the Bears gave the Knights a point. The Knights served an ace, then Fryauf got a kill for a 17-15 North Cedar lead. North Cedar got a kill to begin a long run of points. The Knights scored on two aces, two West Branch hitting errors, and one kill for a 23-15 score. A four hits call on the Knights made it 23-16. K. Luneckas scored a point at the net.

The Knights scored a point at the net for a 24-17 score. K. Luneckas got another kill for a 24-18 score. The Bears hit the ball out of bounds for a 25-18 set score.

The Bears won the second set. West Branch failed to return North Cedar’s serve. Then the Bears scored the next three points with a block by K. Luneckas, a kill by K. Luneckas, and a North Cedar error. The Bears took a 3-1 lead. Three West Branch errors gave the Knights a 4-3 lead. North Cedar hit the ball out of bounds to tie the set at 4-4. An error by the Bears and an ace by the Knights made it 6-4, Knights. Fryauf had a kill for a 6-5 score. North Cedar had an error to tie the set at 6-6. The Knights got a kill then made a serving error for a 7-7 tie.

Fryauf got two kills and a hitting error on the Knights gave the Bears a 10-7 lead. The Knights took a time out. The Bears had a serving error. Maddi Luneckas scored a point at the net, then K. Luneckas got two kills for a 13-8 West Branch lead. The Bears had a serving error. The Knights served an ace for a 13-10 score. The Bears had three consecutive errors for a 13-13 tie. The Bears called a time out.

The teams traded points to an 18-18 tie. North Cedar had two errors for a 20-18 West Branch lead. The Knights took a time out.

The Knights scored a point at the net for a 20-19 score. The Bears scored three points on two North Cedar errors and a kill by Fryauf to take a 23-19 lead. The Bears had two errors for a 23-21 score. Fryauf got a kill, K. Luneckas got a kill, and a kill by Mackenzie Heise gave the Bears a 25-21 win in the second set. The match was tied at 1-1.

The Bears took the third set even though the Knights scored the first four points. A kill by Sophie Nopoulos gave the Bears their first point of the set. The Bears hit the ball out of bounds, then Fryauf got a kill. An ace by Nopoulos made it 6-4, Knights. The Bears had a hitting error, the Knights got a kill, then K. Luneckas had two consecutive kills to tie the set at 7-7. The Bears had a hitting error then a net violation. A kill and an ace by the Knights gave North Cedar an 11-7 edge. The Bears hit the ball out of bounds then, trailing 12-7, took a time out.

The Bears failed to return the ball then had a two-hits call. K. Luneckas got a kill, the Knights had a hitting error, then McKenna Walsh got a kill. The Knights had a net violation, K. Luneckas got a kill, and the Knights took a time out holding on to a one-point, 14-13, lead. The Bears didn’t return the ball, the Knights served an ace, then Heise got a kill for a 16-14 North Cedar lead.

North Cedar won the fourth set to tie the match at 2-2 and force a fifth set. Two West Branch errors started the fourth set. A kill by Kaiya Luneckas made it 2-1, North Cedar. The Bears didn’t return the ball, then West Branch got a kill. A kill by the Knights made it 4-2, North Cedar. The Bears had a hitting error, then Fryauf got a kill. A kill by Nopoulos made it 5-4, North Cedar. Four West Branch errors and a Knights’ ace made it 10-4, North Cedar. The Bears took a time out.

North Cedar scored two more points, then Nopoulos got a kill. An ace by Nopoulos made it 12-6, North Cedar. The Bears didn’t return the ball, then Fryauf scored a point at the net. The Bears didn’t return the ball again, then K. Luneckas got a kill. A kill by Walsh and a kill by K. Luneckas made it 14-10. The Bears took a time out. North Cedar scored the next four points on three kills and a block, taking an 18-10 lead. Heise got a kill, then Riley Vaughan served an ace. The Knights didn’t return the ball then got a kill. An out of bounds hit by the Bears made it 20-13. The Bears took a time out.

The Bears scored the next three points on a block by K. Luneckas, an error by the Knights, and a kill by Walsh. North Cedar got a block, then Fryauf got three consecutive kills for a 24-20 North Cedar lead. The Knights took a time out then scored the set point with a kill. The Knights won the set 25-20 and tied the match at 2-2.

The fifth set was closely played but ultimately went North Cedar’s way. North Cedar got a kill to start the final set. A double hit call on the Knights and a hitting error on the Bears made it 2-1, North Cedar. North Cedar got a kill, then a kill by Nopoulos and two blocks by Fryauf made it 4-3, Bears. A couple of errors by the Bears and an error by the Knights tied the set at 6-6. The Knights made an error, then a kill by Fryauf made it 6-6. Two North Cedar errors gave the Bears an 8-6 lead, and the Knights took a time out.

Fryauf got a kill, then the Bears had two errors. A double hit by the Knights, a West Branch error, and a point at the net by K. Luneckas made it 11-9. K. Luneckas got a kill for a 12-9 West Liberty lead, and the Knights used a time out. The Bears needed three more points, and the Knights needed six more points. A no return by the Bears and a kill by North Cedar made it 11-12. The Bears took a time out. Another West Branch error tied the set at 12-12. A double hit on the Bears gave the Knights a one-point lead. The Bears took a time out. The Bears didn’t return the ball, then the Knights got a kill for the 15-12 set win and 3-2 match win.

“(This was) not what I expected to happen, but I’ll take the win,” North Cedar Head Coach Traci Smith said. “We’re pretty young, so we were just focused on what our game is.”
