Bears start strong, but Durant wins in 3

The 7-15 West Branch volleyball team lost a close set to the Durant Wildcats at West Branch Oct. 3 26-24.


The Bears dropped the second set 25-20, and the Wildcats dominated the third set 25-13 for the Durant sweep.

“(There were) definitely some momentum shifts in the match tonight,” West Branch Head Coach John Walsh said. “We just ended up on the wrong end of that one (first set), trying to dig ourselves out of a hole after that. Just didn’t sustain that momentum. That was our trouble tonight.

“We got on a bad run in the third set and weren’t able to work our way out of that one. We battled well in some stretches but (had) just a few too many mistakes tonight.”

A serving error by the Bears gave Durant their first point of the first set. A serving error by the Wildcats evened the score. A kill by Kaiya Luneckas gave the Bears a one-point edge, then a serving error on the Bears made it 2-2. A kill by Abbey Fryauf and a hitting error by Durant made the score 4-2, Bears. A serving error and a hitting error tied the score at 4-4. West Branch scored the next four points on net serve by Durant, a hit into the net by the Wildcats, a point at the net by the Bears, and a block by Fryauf and Mackenzie Heise.

The Wildcats scored four consecutive points to tie the set on a West Branch serving error, a kill attempt hit into the net, a Durant ace, and a West Branch hitting error. A kill by Fryauf gave the Bears a 9-8 advantage. Each team hit the ball out of bounds, then a Durant block attempt went out of bounds. West Branch hit the ball into the net, then Durant had a net serve. The score was 12-10, Bears.

The Bears tipped a ball that was headed out of bounds, then Sophie Nopoulos got a kill for the Bears. West Branch didn’t return the ball, then an ace serve by Durant tied the score at 13-13. Fryauf got a kill, Durant was called for four hits, then Fryauf got another kills.

The Bears led 16-13 when the Wildcats took a time out. Nopoulos scored with a block, then Durant scored the next four points for another tied score. A serving error and a four hits call on the Bears followed by two kill attempts that went out of bounds made it 17-17. West Branch took a time out.

Durant scored with a kill, Nopoulos got a kill, then Drew Perkins scored with a block. The Bears didn’t return the ball. A kill by Fryauf tied the score at 20-20. The Bears didn’t return the ball, then McKenna Walsh got a kill for a 21-21 tie. A double hit call on the Bears made it 22-21, Durant. The Bears took a time out. M. Walsh got a kill to tie the score at 22-22. Luneckas got a kill for a 23-22 West Branch lead. Durant tied the score with a point at the net. The Bears didn’t return the ball, then Luneckas got a kill for a 24-24 tie. A West Branch serving error and a failure to return the ball by the Bears gave Durant the 26-24 win in the first set.

The second set was closely played with eight tie scores. The last tie was 12-12, then Durant kept the pressure on and maintained their lead. The Bears hit the ball into the net, then Heise got a kill for a 1-1 tie. Two Bears errors gave Durant a 3-1 lead. A kill by Fryauf and a block by Luneckas gave the Bears a 4-3 edge. Durant got a kill then served the ball into the net. Durant had a net violation, then Fryauf got a kill for an 8-6 West Branch lead. A West Branch miscue and a Bears’ kill made it 9-7, Bears. Perkins got a block, then the Bears were called for a carry for a 9-9 tie. Durant served the ball into the net then got a kill for a 10-10 score.

An ace serve by Durant then two consecutive kills by Luneckas made the score 12-11, West Branch. A hitting error on the Bears tied the score at 12-12. Durant scored on a kill and a West Branch hitting error. Durant was called for a net violation then the Wildcats got a kill for a 15-13 Durant lead. Fryauf got a kill, then the Bears had a serving error. A kill by the Wildcats made the score 17-14, and West Branch took a time out. The Bears didn’t return the ball, then Perkins got a kill. A West Branch serving error made the score 19-15. Durant didn’t return the ball then had a four hits call, and the Bears trailed by just two at 19-17.

A serving error by the Bears, a point by the Bears, and a hitting error by West Branch brought the score to 21-18. The Bears hit the ball into the net. West Branch took a time out trailing 22-18.

A Durant net serve and an illegal hit by the Wildcats brought West Branch back to within two points at 22-20. But Durant scored the next three points for the set win on a no return by the Bears and two aces by the Wildcats. Durant took a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Wildcats dominated the third set. Durant scored the first two points then had a serving error. A serving error on the Bears, then two consecutive kills by Fryauf tied the score at 3-3. That was as close as the Bears would get.

Errors and violations on the Bears made it 6-3. A Durant serving error, kill, and block made it 8-4, and West Branch took a time out. Heise got a kill, then Durant scored two points on a West Branch net violation and a kill.

The Wildcats tipped a West Branch hit, and the Bears scored with a block for a 10-8 score. The Bears didn’t return the ball, then Durant had a net serve. The Wildcats continued to build their lead on kills and West Branch errors and violations. With the score 18-9, the Bears took a time out. Durant got a kill then had a serving error. Twice the Bears didn’t return the ball, then a Durant ace made the score 22-10. Durant failed to return the ball for a 22-11 score.

A kill by Fryauf made it 12-22. A net violation by the Wildcats gave the Bears their final point of the set. Durant scored the final two points of the set for a 24-13 score in the set and a 3-0 win for the Wildcats.

“We just needed to get our blockers in the right place (after the first set),” Durant Assistant Coach Shelby Paustain said. “This is kind of a weird court, so our back row had to adjust to not being in the center of the basketball court.”

The Bears won one match and lost three at the CR Prairie Toueney.

Against Prairie, they lost 21-14, 21-9. They defeated Southeast Polk 25-23, 21-15. They lost to Western Dubuque 21-12, 21-19. Against Johnston, the Bears lost 21-18, 21-19.
