West Branch High School’s freshman-sophomore football team fell to the visiting Tipton Tigers 16-8 Friday at the Little Rose Bowl.

The team fell to 5-3 overall, 4-2 in the district after the low-scoring game.

Tipton scored twice in the second quarter. West Branch found the end zone in the fourth quarter with quarterback Trey Eagle rushing for a 23-yard score. Running back Morgan Hartz carried the ball in for a two-point conversion.

“This game was a true battle on the gridiron between two solid freshman-sophomore teams. Tipton is probably the best team we have faced this season.” Coach Matt Hills said. “We continue to feed the (8-0) varsity each week, and adjust to our personnel. With that, a quick Monday-to-Friday turnaround with two full practices, our level of play is right where we need to be. The difference in two of our three losses is just a few plays left on the field.”

The Bears pulled in 210 total yards with 69 in the air and converted three times on fourth down.

The coach said he saw “perfect effort” in the second half.

“We shut out the best fresh-soph team on our schedule 8-0 in the second half. Short of one 74-yard touchdown pass, we matched them — first downs, conversions, rushing yards, passing — step-for-step,” he said. “We had control on our final drive, and just had a couple plays fall short, literally. These young Bears have a very bright future.”

The Bears travel Friday to Guttenberg to play against Clayton Ridge with a 5 p.m. kickoff.
